Evalve to Independence is a cash register and money-handling practice app for iPad, built by Evalve Consulting LLC for learners with autism or intellectual disabilities and the instructors who work with them. Everything stays on the iPad.

Common questions

Who is this for?

Learners in high school life skills classes, 18 to 22 transition programs, and similar settings who are practicing money handling, and the instructor working with them: a teacher, a job coach, a transition specialist, or a parent. It is practice, not therapy, and it supports instruction rather than replacing it.

How do I add a learner?

On the Choose a Learner screen, tap Add a Learner, enter a first name, and pick an avatar. You can also add learners and set each one's support level in Instructor Settings. Profiles are first name only, on purpose.

How do I get into Instructor Settings?

Tap Instructor Settings on the register screen and enter the passcode on the keypad. The passcode when you first install the app is 1234. Change it right away under Passcode in Instructor Settings.

I forgot the passcode.

There is no recovery screen in this version. Deleting and reinstalling the app returns the passcode to 1234, but it also removes every learner and session on that iPad. Email me first if you need to keep the data.

What do the support levels mean?

High Support: coaching is shown and spoken, the next step is highlighted, and key actions ask for a confirmation tap. Guided: the next step is highlighted and hints are available on request. Independent: a clean run with no automatic scaffolds. Set the level per learner in Instructor Settings.

What is next-dollar-up?

A money strategy for learners who are not yet counting exact change: look at the total, hand over the next whole dollar amount above it, and wait for change. During a cash sale the app coaches it step by step, and at the Independent level the learner does it on their own.

Why does a perfect cash sale show 78 percent independent?

The cash task analysis has nine steps, and two of them, greeting the customer and thanking the customer, are role play the app cannot observe. Log those through the Instructor Log button on any checkout screen and the run reaches 100 percent. Card sales score against their own seven-step task analysis.

How do I get session data out?

At the end of a sale, the session summary has Share CSV and Share summary. For everything at once, open Instructor Settings and choose Export all sessions (CSV). Both use the standard share sheet, so you can send to Files, AirDrop, Mail, or any app you choose.

Can I turn off the voice, the sounds, or the vibration?

Yes. In Instructor Settings, Speech has an on and off switch plus a speaking rate, and Feedback has switches for register sounds and haptic feedback.

Can I change the store name or the sales tax?

Yes. Instructor Settings has the store name, a switch for sales tax, and the tax rate.

Can I add my own products?

Not in this version. The store ships with 27 realistic items across Food and Drink, Household, Personal Care, and School and Office. Custom inventory is on the list for a later version.

Does it work on iPhone, or sync between iPads?

It is iPad only, iPadOS 17 or later. Each iPad holds its own data. There are no accounts and no cloud sync, so a learner's sessions live on the iPad where they happened.

Is there a subscription?

No. It is one purchase on the App Store, with no subscription and no in-app purchases.

Where is the data stored? Is it private?

On the iPad only. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. See the privacy policy.

What are the known limits in version 1.0?

English only. No sync between iPads. No custom products. Learner profiles cannot be removed one at a time yet; deleting the app removes everything. Counting change must go smallest coin first at every support level. The card payment is a simulation, a plain tap, with no real card reader.
